Adventure #7: Jimmy’s Driving Lessons: Jump the Creek

Jimmy’s Driving Lessons: Jump the Creek
(Not Recommended)
Some people learn to drive a stick shift in an empty parking lot.
Jimmy learned differently.
There was a creek.
There was an old truck.
There was someone sitting beside me who still had enough faith in my decision-making to get in.
That was their first mistake.

I was still learning the finer points of clutch, shift, gas, and convincing a vehicle to do what I wanted without making sounds that suggested mechanical distress.
Then we came to the creek.
Now, a reasonable person might have stopped, looked at the water, considered the rocks, and carefully chosen the best way across.
Jimmy looked at it and thought:
I got this.
This phrase has preceded an alarming number of stories in my life.
I picked my line, gave the truck some gas, and headed in.
For one glorious moment, it looked like I actually did have it.
Then came the splash.
A very large splash.
The truck bounced, water went everywhere, and my passenger was suddenly participating in a driving lesson they had absolutely not requested.
We made it across.
Mostly.
The truck survived.
We survived.
And somewhere in the imaginary passenger-side driving report, I'm fairly certain the words needs improvement were underlined several times.
The lesson?
Apparently Jimmy's method of learning to drive involved getting the basic idea right and allowing momentum to handle the remaining paperwork.
There would eventually be another lesson involving bumps.
That one went considerably more airborne.
But that's a story for another day.

Jimmy is a fictional treasure-hunting persona. The raccoon insists he is real.
